PROJECT EXPERIENCE / ICC SYDNEY

550 kW decommissioning. Three work areas.

Solar Fit Solutions worked with Second Life Solar on the decommissioning of a 550 kW solar system at ICC Sydney in Darling Harbour. The project story covers the TikTok building, Ballroom and Convention Theatre.

A clear plan before the system comes off

01 / Scope

Confirm what stays, what is removed, the building programme and the records available.

02 / Access

Coordinate roof access, building operations and any lifting requirements with the project team.

03 / Removal

Agree the electrical isolation, disconnection and removal sequence with appropriately licensed personnel.

04 / Handover

Confirm the agreed route for equipment and the handover documents included in the scope.

When a solar system needs to come off the roof

A roof replacement, major refurbishment or change to a building’s energy system can require part or all of an existing solar installation to be removed. The first step is to establish what must be disconnected, what will stay in place and how the work fits around other contractors.

For strata buildings, that also means identifying the assets involved and the approval and access arrangements with the owners corporation or strata manager. We scope the work before recommending a removal sequence.

What happens to removed equipment?

The destination of panels and other equipment should be agreed before removal. Whether equipment is suitable for reuse depends on its condition, any required testing and acceptance by the receiving party. Recycling arrangements depend on the materials and facilities available.

We discuss the agreed route for the equipment and the handover records required. Where available and included in the scope, receipts or receiving-party records can form part of the project documentation.

What to send us for an initial assessment

  • The site location, building contact and reason for removing the system.
  • Approximate system size and any layouts, asset registers or electrical drawings available.
  • Roof and equipment photographs, plus known roof-condition or access restrictions.
  • The equipment to retain, the equipment to remove and the proposed destination.
  • The target programme, other contractors involved and any restrictions on working hours.

A site assessment may still be needed before access arrangements, pricing and the final scope can be confirmed.

Questions about solar decommissioning

Can you remove only part of a solar system?

A partial removal needs an assessment of the affected electrical system and the equipment staying in service. Tell us what the building works require so we can establish an appropriate scope.

How much does solar decommissioning cost?

Pricing depends on system size, electrical scope, roof access, lifting requirements, site coordination and the destination of removed equipment. We quote against the agreed project requirements.

How long will the work take?

The programme depends on the system and access requirements, building operations and other works. We confirm a proposed sequence and timing after reviewing the site information.

Do you install the replacement system as well?

We also provide commercial and strata solar services. Any replacement design and installation needs its own agreed scope alongside the removal work.
